I feel safest in those vulnerable spaces where the labor of birthing or dying produces such an earnest sweat that the masks we carry disintegrate, revealing a wild womb-man bearing all 32 teeth and panting the mantra “I can’t do this” just before a new soul emerges from the darkness; or a mouth open wide enough for an eternal spirit to climb out of, stretching out to hug the city from end to end before zipping back to the darkness, leaving behind only the essence of childhood.
these moments are not perfect. they are impolite, they do not meet expectations, they smell of excrement and ocean water; tears, they are profane.
this is where my skill of advocacy and loving care shine brightest.
